JKD Class Grading
At JKD-Kali Northampton gradings are optional. You will not be forced to take a grading if you do not want to. You are free to join in the class manoeuvres learn what you can, develop your martial skills and enjoy the workout.
There are 9 grading levels to attain Black Belt status. The colour of your T-shirt is used as an indication of your grade. Starting with White you then progress to Grey, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, Purple, Brown and Black.
Gradings are taken by instructor Damien Mills every 4-5 months at the early stages, sometimes shorter intervals depending on how your skills develop. Generally, the higher the grade the longer the grading period.
The different coloured grading T-shirts are awarded together with a certificate detailing the level achieved.

Class Equipment
No special uniform is required for your classes. Tracksuit bottoms, T-Shirt and trainers will be fine.
Regular Classes
In each class you will typically use a pair of sticks, bag gloves, focus pads and kick shields. Sticks can be purchased from your instructor. Bag gloves, focus pads and kick shields are provided for use in class.
Full contact sparring sessions
In order to prevent serious injury during the full contact stick sparring sessions you will need a grilled headguard, body armour suitable for full contact weapons sparring, hand, forearm and elbow guards. In addition, upper leg and groin guards can be used.
The hand, elbow and leg guards used are typically hockey/ice hockey protective clothing. The head guard, forearm guards and body armour is generally martial art specific equipment.
